Dr. Seuss has been entertaining children and adults for almost 70 years. Born in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts Dr Seuss' real name was Theodore Seuss Geisel. Seuss was his mother's maiden name. When he began writing children's books in the late 1930's he used two pseudonyms; Dr. Seuss and Theo LeSieg. Dr. Seuss came from using his middle name and the title Dr; his father had always hoped he'd become a doctor. Theo LeSieg simply comes from reversing the spelling of his last name. Together with his wife, Dr Seuss wrote 44 books for children and illustrated many more.
Through the use of silly rhymes, repetitive sounds and zany situations Dr Seuss remains a favorite of children. The books of Dr. Seuss are excellent early readers to be read by parent to child or by the child themselves. His books have been translated into at least 15 languages and over 200 million copies in print. Dr Seuss toys, games and collectibles are popular gifts.
